Anyone watching the news today? Empty Anyone watching the news today?

Anyone watching the news today? If you don't mind me saying, I am sick of Washington DC. Both parties are so removed. Time to elect all new people. I'm thinking, if you are a incumbent, your out!!!!! Also, time for term limits. One term, 6 years, no re election, on everyone. Same for the Supreme Court. Life time appointments, what a joke. Time for a change, opps, we heard that last election, change! Oh well, guess I said enough, I'm sure someone in DC is listening in, lol. One last thing, went and saw the movie J. Edger yesterday. Great movie, I'm sure a lot of it was fiction, but looks as if Mr. H had files on everyone. Best part of the movie, was near the end when Nixon got the call that J. Edger had died. Can't repeat the exact words President Nixon said on here, but really funny. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. When I close tomorrow, taking a few days off. Grand babies are on their way! Can't wait.

I think we used to have a political section in the forum. If memory serves me correctly, it went away because we didn't really want Barber Shop Talk to turn into a political discussion board -- at least not unless it was about political things that directly affect barbering like changes to state barber laws, etc. Someone feel free to correct me if my memory is incorrect.

I was late (extremely) changing the auto-mailer for newly registered members. The auto-mailer used to incourage it... my mistake. I initially incouraged it for 2 reasons:

(1) We need to exercisee our voice politically
(2) It would improve this site's rankking in the search engines by having the political keywords in the posts, as it did.

As this site belongs to the barbers (I'm just Administrator at the time and a Co-Founder), The political section got voted out and therefore removed. I think the voting members fear opposing views, not realizing it is an opportunity to separate retoric from fact, or fearing retoric would be separated from fact. Just a personal opinion.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally preferred to not have a political section because there are tons of political forums out there and I didn't think that was the purpose of this forum. I have no problem discerning fact from rhetoric, I can hold my own fairly well on a political forum and I sometimes think it's fun having my views challenged.

I've been a member of several forums over the years and, while the political ones are popular, they almost always get nasty after a while and I don't see having a political section as adding a long-term benefit to a forum about barbering. As I understand it, one of the main purposes of this forum is the unification of the barber trade. While I agree that having a political section would probably raise the forum's Google profile and may attract new members (most likely non-barbers), I also submit that having a political section on this board would become more divisive than unifying and would ultimately lead to the demise of the board.

All that said, there may be times when a limited political discussion is appropriate here. For example, a discussion of barber laws and their political ramifications would perfectly appropriate for this forum, as would a conversation about how you handle political conversations in your place of business. For the record, I have no problem with politics or political discussions and anyone is welcome to talk politics with me via PM.
