Barber Apprenticeship Empty Barber Apprenticeship

Been a long time since I've checked in. Been busy finding a solid path to learning the craft. I landed an apprenticeship and started about 3 weeks ago now. As expected it's damn hard being the total newbie that I am. All the guys at the shop are cool so far and help/teach as they can and I typically shadow the shop manager and watch. I've done a few cuts now though not solo and with the pros having to step in as I go. It's daunting and somewhat intimidating to say the least right now. And I'd be lying if I said at times my confidence isn't shook. I'm working on a 50/50 split right from the start on any cuts I do and learning on live heads who are customers as they see comfortable putting in my chair. I don't mind this except for I don't really feel comfortable practicing on strangers just yet as I feel I am too new, inexperienced and unknowledgeable in even the real basics right now. I envy those who were able to go to school and learn the basics first while ironically those I work with that went to school say bypassing school and going this route is much better. Easy for them to say, lol. I know I can learn it well if given the time and patient teaching. But I don't know how much time I really have to do so. I don't feel rushed by anyone per say and the shop manager who is my main mentor doesn't seem worried. But of course I am. I've inquired as to what the plan is and how he thinks he wants to teach me and am confident he is invested in it. Though I'm still unclear on the overall plan so for now I'm just trying to roll with it and figure they know what they are doing since I'm far from the first to apprentice there under him. Still with both my lack of skills and confidence right now I find myself privately in a panic at how much I have to learn and how am ever going to do so. So many different styles and ways and tools to master. It's scary. I won't lie. But I know this is what I want to do. I just hope I have what it takes. They make it look so easy and maybe forget how hard it can be for a rookie like me. I know how to teach (in general) and have successfully done so often in other jobs I've had. But I know everyone has their own way of teaching things and so I'm just trying to go with it and not be to hard on myself or worry about learning it all. Though the latter is difficult presently and even as I type this. I can't help but think (inwardly) 'oh my god how am I ever going to learn and master all this!'

Barbering is not something you learn overnight, it takes a long time.  Took me 2 years (yes, years) before it finally all came together.  There are many ways to cut hair, you have to find your own way.  I have been cutting hair 5 years now and still learn something every day, never quit learning.  In a typical school, you have to be on the floor 200 hrs. before you even cut any hair.  Building a clientele when you start cutting hair can also take a few years, patience is needed for this career and sometimes I still struggle with this on a slow day but it is what it is.

The apprenticeship alone is a two year requirement as you probably know.

About 40 years ago, I had 2000 hrs of school, then a 2 yr apprenticeship. Michigan's state requirement then. No apprenticeship anymore. The more barbers you work with the more you learn. I learned a lot from a half a dozen barbers. Each one is a little different, my flat tops are the result of 3 different perspectives. It's worth the time invested with others. In the end, you'll have the busiest shop with no real completion. Knowledge is money.
