Re: Would like to get into barbering
1st and foremost, is it for barbering? Alot of Beauty colleges are trying to pass themseslves off as teaching barbering. You will hardly learn how to cut clipper-over-comb in a beauty college. And you most certainly won't learn the art of shaving.
If they teach shaves, do they teach you with a straight razor? Many schools have left practice and gone to the disposable razor that everyone uses in their own home.
You may take an ad out in here or open a new topic looking for a place to apprentice in the US or (if Canada allows it) Canada that uses the straight razor. It is becoming a lost art. Not all states in the US allow apprenticeships. I'm not sure if the provinces in Canada do or not.
Talk to your barber board, preferably over the phone. It quite often takes them forever to check their e-mails. I know one province in Canada doesn't even have a board, kinda like our state of Alabama. You may check their site if they have one for requirements in your area. If the schools in the US don't meet their requirements, any license you get here may not reciprocate to Canada.
If I can think of any other pitfalls to watch out for I will comment more later.
If you talk to a barber college, after getting the insight from the adminstration request a cut from a junior barber student. I did. They can certainly give you more insight to what you might expect as a student. And you get the experience of what it's like to be a practice dummy. It really is a rewarding experience.
Hope I've been of some help.

2 years later.... did you go to school? If so, did you get out of it what you expected?
